Where?

Hybrid hackathons embody the principles of hybrid learning – an educational approach that fuses face-to-face classes with online learning. In this innovative setting, some students immerse themselves in the physical event, while others engage remotely, with tools like video conferencing bridging the gap.

So, why do we leverage hybrid learning? Here's a three-point breakdown:

  1. Flexibility: Hybrid learning is all about adaptability - flexible schedules, teaching modes, and ways to engage with materials. It even offers flexibility in peer and instructor interaction. For students unable to attend in-person, hybrid learning ensures they can continue their educational journey from home.

  2. Real-Time Communication: Few things match the immediacy and richness of in-person academic discourse. Hybrid learning leverages face-to-face interaction for real-time engagement, perfect for group work, presentations, and deep conversations. Then, these academic relationships are continued online, combining the best of both worlds.

  3. Independence: Online learning comes with a multitude of freedoms. Self-managed and independent learners often thrive in this environment, relishing the ability to learn from any location, revisit materials at their own pace, and engage in asynchronous discourse with peers.

Now, how do we apply this in a hackathon setting? We envisage two scenarios:

  • Hybrid Cross-Team: In this setup, each student design team works in person but connects virtually with other student design teams. The collaboration is physical within the team but digital across teams.

  • Hybrid Internal Team: The hybrid nature cuts through individual teams in this scenario. Some members of a student design team work in person, while others contribute virtually.

We aim to leverage available technologies in both scenarios to ensure seamless collaboration, maximizing learning opportunities. By experimenting with these setups, we hope to create a dynamic and engaging platform that cultivates innovation while fostering critical skills.
